What is drop in footwear and why is it 0 mm in barefoot shoes?

Index

Drop explained in 60 seconds (with simple examples)

The drop is the difference in height between the back of the shoe (heel) and the front (metatarsals). If the back is 20 mm and the front is 10 mm, the difference of 10 mm would be the drop. Let's say it's a kind of "heel" that is intrinsic to the sole of the shoe.

When we talk about barefoot shoes, the goal is for all their characteristics to be like walking barefoot, so walking completely flat is much more natural than walking with some inclination.

That's why barefoot shoes have a 0mm DROP, because the height of their sole is the same at the heel as it is at the metatarsals.

If the heel measures 5 mm and the metatarsals measure 5 mm, the difference in height is 0 mm, so we have a 0 mm DROP, or as it is commonly said, "no drop."

How to measure the drop of your sneakers at home (marble method)

Very easy. All you need isa marbleand aflat surface:

  1. Leave the shoe on the surface.
  2. Place the marble in the heel area, on top of the insole.
  3. Observe whether the marble moves forward (this would indicate that there is no incline and therefore a positive drop), and if the marble remains stationary in the heel area, this means that there is no incline, and therefore we have a drop of 0 mm.

Effects of the drop on your body

It is important to consider the drop of a shoe when choosing, as it can have an impact on the way we walk (we are always talking about healthy people without pathologies):

  • Postural alteration:generatesa series of "zigzag" compensations to keep us stable.
  • Alteration in gait:acceleratesthe first two phases of gait, and by shifting the center of gravity forward, causes us to walk with a slight forward lean.
  • Alteration of plantar pressure distribution:transferspart of theweight supported by the heel to the toes (due to its inclination), which is unnatural.

That's why it's importantto know what you're wearingandchoose wisely, especially if you spend many hours on your feet.

Drop ≠ cushioning

They are not the same.

  • Thedropisthe difference in height(angle).
  • Cushioning isthe amount/property of foam(softness).

You can havea0mmdrop with lots of foam orahighdrop with a thin sole. What matters ishowthewhole thingmakes you move.
