Effects of shoe drop on your body
It is important to consider the drop of a shoe when choosing, as it can have repercussions on our way of walking (we always refer to healthy individuals without pathologies):
- Postural alteration: generates a series of "zigzag" compensations to maintain stability.
- Gait alteration: accelerates the first two phases of gait, and by shifting the center of gravity forward, it causes us to walk slightly leaning forward.
- Alteration of plantar pressure distribution: transfers part of the weight supported by the heel towards the toes (due to its inclination), which is unnatural.
That's why it's important to know what you're wearing and choose wisely, especially if you spend many hours on your feet.
Drop ≠ cushioning
They are not the same.
- Drop is the difference in heights (angle).
- Cushioning is the quantity/property of the foam (softness).
You can have a 0 mm drop with a lot of foam or a high drop with a thin sole. What matters is how the overall design makes you move .
